Distance-Based vs. Zip Code-Based Delivery — Which Should You Use?

What This Is
BRS gives you two ways to set up delivery fees. The right option depends on how your pricing and taxes vary based on customer location.

This article helps you choose the right setup.

Option 1: Distance-Based Delivery
Distance-based delivery charges customers based on how far they are from your business.
You define mileage ranges and assign a delivery fee to each range.

For example:

  • 0 to 10 miles → $25
  • 10 to 20 miles → $50

Best for:

  • Businesses where delivery pricing is based on distance
  • Businesses where pricing and tax rates stay consistent across all areas

Important:

Taxes are not configured here. If you use distance-based delivery, you must set taxes separately in:
Website → Checkout Settings → Payment Configurations

Option 2: Zip Code-Based Delivery

Zip code-based delivery lets you define pricing and taxes for each specific area.

You add each zip code you serve and assign:

  • A delivery fee
  • A tax rate

Best for:

  • Businesses where pricing changes by city or area
  • Businesses where tax rates vary by location

This option gives you more control, but takes more time to set up.

How to Choose

Use zip code-based delivery if:
  • Your tax rates vary by location
  • Your delivery fees change depending on the area

Use distance-based delivery if:

  • Your pricing is based on mileage
  • Your delivery fees and tax rates are consistent
